June Bug Café in Midpines is a relaxed American restaurant and café that fits comfortably into the rustic charm of this small mountain community just south of Yosemite. It’s not a place for formal dining but rather a spot where locals and travelers alike drop in for a straightforward, hearty meal in a casual lodge-style setting. You order at the counter, pick up your drinks and starters, and the kitchen brings your main dish to the table, all while you soak in a cozy, no-frills atmosphere paired with forest views.

The menu leans heavily into classic American comfort with some thoughtful twists, catering to a range of preferences including options for vegans and meat-eaters. Breakfast is a solid choice here, especially if you’re visiting early on your way out to explore the area — dishes like huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, and vegetarian omelettes provide filling fuel with fresh, straightforward ingredients. For lunch or dinner, the flat iron steak, St. Louis style ribs, and short rib steak stand out, accompanied by familiar sides like mashed potatoes and fresh salads. The café also offers lighter fare such as soups (including hot and sour pork or vegan split pea) and salads for those seeking something less heavy.

The vibe feels easygoing and functional, with a rustic lodge aesthetic made up of basic wooden tables and a communal feel that picks up especially when groups come in—getting busy, lively, and a bit noisy as diners share stories about the day’s Yosemite hikes or local adventures. Families, groups of friends, and solo travelers trying to escape the more crowded park eateries tend to appreciate June Bug’s welcoming concept and steady, prompt service.

Visitors who relish comfort food with a homemade touch will find something reliable here. The afternoon or early dinner hours bring a relaxed mood, perfect for settling in after outdoor activities or a long drive. The straightforward, locally sourced ingredients and daily changing menus reveal a kitchen passionate about flavor without the fuss. While the BBQ sauce on the ribs may lean a bit sweet for some, the portions satisfy those with a big appetite after active days in the mountains.

June Bug Café suits those who want a down-to-earth spot to recharge with familiar American fare in Midpines—whether starting with a fresh fruit and oatmeal breakfast or winding down with a peanut butter or key lime pie for dessert. It’s a practical and genuine slice of mountain life, far from slick tourist traps but warm in its own rugged way.

Best ribs I’ve ever had. Steak was really good as well. Loved the mashed potatoes. Nice view and a good rustic vibe.

I had dinner at June Bug Café during my trip near Yosemite, and it was a great find! After hearing mixed reviews about the park and lodge restaurants, I decided to drive a bit further south — definitely worth it. I ordered the St. Louis style pork ribs, which came with mashed potatoes. The portion was huge, and the food was solid overall. The BBQ sauce was a little too sweet for my taste, but still enjoyable. Prices are on the higher side, but considering the limited options in the area, it’s understandable. If you're looking for better quality than the typical park restaurants, I’d definitely recommend checking this place out.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Surprisingly Stellar Food in a Rustic Setting June Bug Café in Midpines might look unassuming—order at the counter, grab your drinks and salad or soup, and they’ll bring your entrée to your table. You bus your own table when you’re done. It’s part of a rustic lodge setup with cabins and dorms… not exactly fine dining at first glance. But don’t let the casual setup fool you—the food is absolutely next level. I had the Slow Roasted Herb Marinated Half Chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and it was fantastic. Tender, flavorful, perfectly roasted. We also tried the Vegan Roasted Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Curry Samosas, which were surprisingly complex and delicious. They rotate their menu daily (check Facebook!), and everything is made with care. Salads were fresh, soup was rich and comforting (Cream of Broccoli with Carrots today), and the portions were solid. Honestly? Probably the best meal we’ve had on our national park trip—and we weren’t expecting that from a little hillside café. Highly recommend.

Went for dinner with a group of 14 people. Soon the restaurant got filled and busy. The team served really quick and taste of the food was really good. I let the team know their service was really impressive. I ordered vegan meal and it was superb. Every single one of us enjoyed. Highly recommend to visit.

Wow, amazing place!! Menu changes every day, chefs are obviously very passionate for the craft. Every dish me and my family tried from here is a smash hit! For dinner: my favorite dishes have been the steak, salmon with bell pepper sauce, and the mushroom wellington. The mushroom Wellington was my favorite. Very creative and super flavorful! Home made ranch for the salad sheeesh For breakfast: the hashbrowns are SO GOOD! Perfectly crispy. Desserts: apple pie and cheesecake are not too sweet, very flavorful Inside is super cozy and has a beautiful view. You have to clean up after yourself and bring the dishes to the front, which is easy to do. They have a covered patio that is dog friendly and has heat lamps. 10/10, love this place
